Does Insurance Cover Addiction Treatment?

Yes, most health insurance plans are required to cover substance use disorder treatment. Under the Affordable Care Act and the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, insurance companies must provide coverage for addiction treatment services that is comparable to coverage for other medical conditions.

This means that if you have health insurance, there’s a strong likelihood your plan will cover at least a portion of your addiction treatment costs at CommonHealth Recovery. Coverage typically includes outpatient therapy, medication-assisted treatment, individual counseling, group therapy, and related services.

The specific amount covered depends on your individual plan, including factors like your deductible, copayment amounts, out-of-pocket maximums, and whether your provider is in-network or out-of-network. Our team verifies all these details for you so there are no surprises.

How to Verify Your Insurance Benefits

The fastest and easiest way to understand your coverage is to let us handle the verification for you. Here’s how the process works.

Step 1: Contact Our Admissions Team

Call CommonHealth Recovery at (502) 661-1444 or complete our online insurance verification form. You’ll provide basic information about your insurance coverage including the name of your insurance company, your policy or member ID number, and the policyholder’s name and date of birth.

Step 2: We Contact Your Insurance Provider

Our admissions specialists will contact your insurance company directly to verify your benefits. We’ll determine what services are covered, your deductible and copayment amounts, any prior authorization requirements, and your estimated out-of-pocket costs.

This verification process typically takes just a few hours, allowing you to start treatment without delays.

Step 3: We Explain Your Coverage

Once we’ve verified your benefits, we’ll explain everything in clear, understandable language. You’ll know exactly how much your insurance will cover, what you’ll be responsible for paying, and when payment is due. No confusing insurance terminology, no hidden fees—just honest, transparent information.

Step 4: Begin Treatment

With your insurance verified and your financial responsibility clearly outlined, you can focus entirely on your recovery. We handle all billing and claims directly with your insurance company throughout your treatment.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Even with insurance coverage, you may have some out-of-pocket expenses. Understanding these costs upfront helps you plan accordingly and prevents billing surprises.

Common Insurance Responsibilities

Deductibles: The amount you must pay before your insurance begins covering services. Once your deductible is met for the year, your insurance typically covers a larger percentage of treatment costs.

Copayments: A fixed amount you pay for each treatment session or service. Copays typically range from $10 to $50 per visit depending on your plan.

Coinsurance: The percentage of treatment costs you’re responsible for after meeting your deductible. For example, if your plan has 80/20 coinsurance, your insurance pays 80% and you pay 20%.

Out-of-Pocket Maximum: The most you’ll pay during your coverage year. Once you reach this amount, your insurance covers 100% of covered services for the remainder of the year.

We’ll clearly explain all of these amounts during your benefit verification so you understand your financial commitment before beginning treatment.

Self-Pay and Payment Plans

We never want cost to be a barrier to life-saving treatment. For individuals without insurance coverage or with limited benefits, CommonHealth Recovery offers self-pay options and flexible payment arrangements.

Financial Hardship Program

Under certain circumstances, some individuals may qualify for our financial hardship program. This requires proper evaluation, and our Patient Accounts team will work with you to determine what assistance you qualify for.

Payment Plans Available

If you’re unable to pay the full cost upfront, we offer extended payment plans that fit within your budget. We’ll create a customized payment schedule that allows you to receive the treatment you need while managing the financial aspects responsibly.

Applying for Coverage During Treatment

If you don’t currently have insurance, our team can assist you with applying for Kentucky Medicaid or other governmental assistance programs. Many of our clients qualify for coverage but weren’t aware of it. We’ll guide you through the application process and advocate on your behalf.

Our Commitment to Transparent Billing

At CommonHealth Recovery, we believe in complete transparency when it comes to treatment costs. You’ll never receive surprise bills or encounter hidden fees. Here’s what you can count on from us:

Upfront Cost Estimates: We provide detailed cost estimates before you begin treatment so you know what to expect.

Clear Communication: We explain all charges in plain language, not confusing medical billing codes.

Insurance Advocacy: We work directly with your insurance company to maximize your benefits and minimize your out-of-pocket costs.

Flexible Solutions: If financial challenges arise during treatment, we’ll work with you to find solutions that allow you to continue receiving care.

Assistance with Applications: We help uninsured patients apply for Medicaid, Medicare, or other assistance programs they may qualify for.

Medicare Coverage for Addiction Treatment

CommonHealth Recovery accepts Medicare for eligible addiction treatment services. Medicare Part B covers outpatient mental health and substance use disorder services, while Medicare Advantage plans often provide additional benefits for addiction treatment.

Your Medicare Responsibilities

Before beginning treatment, familiarize yourself with your Medicare benefits. Medicare typically covers a significant portion of addiction treatment costs, but you’ll be responsible for your Part B deductible, 20% coinsurance for most outpatient services, and any services Medicare specifically excludes from coverage.

We’ll verify your Medicare eligibility, process all claims on your behalf, and bill any supplemental insurance or secondary coverage you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance Coverage

Most insurance plans cover outpatient addiction treatment including medication-assisted treatment, individual therapy, and group counseling. The Affordable Care Act requires insurance companies to cover substance use disorder treatment as an essential health benefit. Your specific coverage depends on your plan details, which we’ll verify for you.

Yes, Kentucky Medicaid provides comprehensive coverage for substance use disorder treatment including outpatient services, medication-assisted treatment, and counseling. CommonHealth Recovery accepts all Kentucky Medicaid managed care plans. If you have Medicaid, contact us to verify your specific benefits.

The length of coverage varies by insurance plan and individual medical necessity. Many plans cover 90 days or more of outpatient treatment, with the possibility of extensions if your treatment team determines continued care is medically necessary. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, at least 90 days of treatment is recommended for optimal outcomes.

If your insurance company denies coverage for addiction treatment, don’t give up. Denials can often be appealed. Our admissions team has experience working with insurance companies and can help you understand the reason for denial and your appeal options. We’ll advocate on your behalf to get you the coverage you’re entitled to receive.

Many insurance plans provide out-of-network benefits that cover a percentage of treatment costs even when the provider isn’t in your plan’s network. We’ll check whether you have out-of-network coverage and explain how much you can expect to be reimbursed. In some cases, out-of-network coverage combined with our uninsured discount can make treatment quite affordable.

CommonHealth Recovery accepts various payment methods including insurance assignment (we bill your insurance directly), HSA and FSA cards, credit and debit cards, personal checks, and cash payments. For self-pay clients, we can set up automatic payment plans for your convenience.
